1965 Royal Enfield Turbo Twin

The legendary Geoff Duke joined Royal Enfield in 1964 to re vitalise the company’s image and sales, plus head up development of their GP5 250cc programme. A year earlier the Villiers 4T 250cc two stroke motor arrived on the scene, and Duke saw this as the obvious choice for his new model, the Turbo Twin. Similar to the Villers 2T in appearance, the 4T featured an extra pair of transfer ports and ported pistons that offered higher compression. With a four-speed gearbox the 4T made 17HP and married to the Crusader frame Enfield hoped its new Turbo Twin would produce a 70mph machine with great handling.

Early road tests confirmed they had achieved the objectives, with one magazine claiming the Turbo Twin had a firm ride and its low centre of gravity made bend-swinging a pleasure. A low 29in seat height catered for the more vertically challenged but the ride isn’t too cramped for those taller and reasonable progress can be made as long as the Villiers unit is kept ‘buzzing’. One thing that was noted by publications in the sixties was how quiet the bike was; the Turbo Twin’s silencers were especially designed for the 4T engine, with the sound remaining unique to the Turbo Twin to this day.

This lovely example is in excellent original condition with only minor refurbishment over its 54 years of service. Located at , this bike has UK ownership and registration papers dating back to 1978. A beautiful piece of British motorcycling history that starts and runs perfectly. Current on Vintage registration, this bike can be viewed at .
