DESCRIPTION
Anyone interested in the OWO1 needs no introduction of Yamaha’s most successful WSBK contenders. Thinly disguised with the minimum attachments required to make it street legal, the Yamaha OWO1 was a pure race bike built with only one intention: to beat Honda’s now legendary RC30, and Bimota’s super competitive YB4, in the World Superbike Championship. The OWO1 was designed to be an affordable entry into WSB, and that’s exactly what happened with this particular example. Clive Padgett, the iconic motorcycle dealer now famed for incredible successes at the Isle of Man TT races, was in 1988 a Yamaha dealer. He purchased this bike from Yamaha & meticulously prepared it using Yamaha’s over the counter race kit. With Brit Rob McElnea in the saddle, this bike finished third and fourth-place in the Hungarian round of the1989 World Superbike Championship, and then finished the debut year off with an incredible fifth place overall in the 1990 WSB Championship!! The bike was then sold to Dennis Irvin who used it to win the Scottish Superbike championship. Padgett’s had two factory bikes at the time, the other is still owned by Padgett’s in the UK. This bike has the correct OWO1 engine from the factory and is finished in the original colour scheme with its fuel tank signed by Rob McElnae. The last outing for this spectacular bike was at the 2011 Spa classic (details on file). Complete information is available from Yamaha UK, Padgetts and Dennis Irvin. The editor of renown bike mag Motorcycle USA, prepared and published an comprehensive article on this bike, copy of which comes with the sale as does other relevant items of memorabilia. This is a genuine motorcycle, totally unique and presently located in Australia.
