2004 nissan patrol problems Page 7

The 2004 Nissan Patrol (GU/Y61) is tough as old boots, but it’s not invincible—especially the 3.0‑litre ZD30 diesel of that era.

Petrol 4.5/4.8s are generally stout (and thirsty), while any Patrol that’s towed or waded should have its cooling, clutch/auto and diff breathers checked.

  • ZD30 concerns: overboost/heat leading to piston or turbo failure; look for catch‑can, EGT gauge, clean MAF, and no intercooler leaks.
  • Steering shimmy (“death wobble”): worn panhard bushes, king‑pin bearings, tie‑rod ends, or poor wheel balance.
  • Driveline/hubs: swivel‑hub and axle‑seal weeps, front wheel bearings, and uni joints after muddy work.
  • Rust traps: rear barn doors, roof gutters, chassis rails and body mounts—worse on ex‑beach rigs.
  • Fuel electrics: sub‑tank transfer pump and level sender glitches.
  • Ancillaries: EGR/soot gunking, tired alternators post water crossings, and sagged suspension bushes.

Get a pre‑purchase inspection and budget for preventative maintenance; a sorted Patrol is a legend, a neglected one is heavy garden art. Documentation and service history are your best friends here.
