2006 jeep grand cherokee diesel problems Page 4

The 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel (3.0 CRD) can be tough as a paddock gate, but it’s got a few gremlins worth checking. Most issues trace back to the Mercedes-sourced OM642 and age-related wear rather than outright catastrophe. Common dramas include:

• Swirl motor/intake swirl flap failures causing codes and limp mode; often needs manifold-off surgery.
• EGR valve clogging and intake carbon build-up, leading to rough running and smoke.
• Split turbo/intercooler hoses or boost leaks, giving wheezy performance and warning lights.
• Injector seal leaks (“black death”) leaving soot and a whiff of diesel under the cover.
• NAG1 5-speed transmission conductor plate/solenoid issues causing harsh shifts or limp mode.
• Front diff and suspension bushes, plus propshaft CVs, wearing out and thumping over bumps.
• Cooling bits (thermostat/water pump) seeping, and the alternator decoupler pulley chirping.

Use the correct low‑SAPS oil and keep the intake clean; service the “sealed-for-life” gearbox anyway and your wallet will forgive you. As ever, a pre‑purchase inspection by a diesel specialist is cheaper than finding out the hard way.
