2007 bmw x5 problems Page 2

The 2007 BMW X5 (E70) can be brilliant—right up until it introduces you to its favourite hobby: warning lights. Expect age-related niggles rather than terminal drama, but a pre-purchase inspection is non-negotiable. The V8 4.8i likes a drink and, occasionally, a smoke; the 3.0d pulls hard but has soot-related foibles. Budget for suspension and cooling refreshes, and befriend a BMW specialist before the iDrive does anything “creative.”

• Oil leaks: valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets; V8s can also weep at the alternator bracket gasket and suffer valve stem seal smoke.
• ZF 6-speed auto and transfer case: mechatronic sleeve leaks, shudder, and transfer case actuator gear wear.
• Rear air suspension: leaking air bags and tired compressors causing a droopy tail.
• Cooling system: water pump and expansion tank failures; keep an eye on temps in summer.
• Diesel bits: EGR/DPF clogging on short trips; split intercooler hoses; swirl flap concerns on older M57s.
• Electrics: iDrive/CCC glitches, parking sensors, window regulators, and battery drain if it’s mostly doing short runs.
• Front-end wear: control arm bushes and ball joints on heavy SUVs don’t last forever.
• Sunroof drains and panoramic mechanisms: blockages lead to water ingress and damp carpets.

Buy on condition, not badges; a pampered example beats a cheap one that’s been teaching mechanics new swear words.
