2008 nissan pathfinder diesel problems

The 2008 Nissan Pathfinder diesel (R51, YD25) can be a sturdy tourer, but a few gremlins like to tag along.

Watch for these usual suspects:

  • Timing chain stretch and rattles on cold start; neglect can snowball
  • EGR/intake soot build-up causing rough idle and limp mode
  • Turbo/intercooler boost leaks or split hoses sapping power
  • Radiator failure cross-contaminating ATF in autos (“strawberry milkshake”); many owners fit a bypass or replacement radiator
  • Suspension bush wear and rear wheel bearings after heavy towing or corrugations

Look for a full service history, listen from stone-cold, and budget for preventive cooling/transmission work if it hasn’t been done.

A pre-purchase inspection by a diesel specialist is money well spent and far cheaper than a new chain or gearbox.
