2009 holden captiva review Page 5

The 2009 Holden Captiva is the SUV equivalent of instant noodles: affordable, handy, and occasionally leaves you wondering what’s really in it.

Space is decent, some variants squeeze in seven seats, and the ride is comfy enough if you’re not in a hurry. The steering’s light, the cabins are plasticky but useful, and the diesels pull well while the petrol V6 likes a drink. Running costs, however, can snowball faster than a dodgy marketplace bid if maintenance has been skimped. If you’re shopping, buy on condition and service history, not badges and shiny tyres.

• Timing chain stretch on some V6 petrols; rough running and warning lights are red flags.
• Auto transmission shudder or harsh shifts; fluid changes and software updates can help.
• AWD clutch/rear diff issues; listen for binding, clunks, or reluctant engagement.
• Cooling leaks (thermostat housing, water pump) and intermittent electrical gremlins.
• Diesel EGR/soot buildup if driven only on short trips; prefers regular highway runs.
