2009 mitsubishi lancer problems

The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer is generally a tough little commuter, but age and neglect can make it throw a sulk worthy of a soap opera. The big talking point is the CVT: silky when serviced, surly when ignored—listen for whine, feel for shudder, and check the service history for proper fluid changes. Suspension bushings and strut tops like to clock off early, and a few fluids may attempt a jailbreak around the rocker cover. Here’s what owners and mechanics commonly report:

  • CVT judder/flare, whining, or harsh engagement; overdue fluid or a tired valve body can be culprits
  • Front lower control arm bushes and strut top mounts causing clunks or tramlining
  • Oil seepage from rocker cover; occasional higher oil consumption on well‑worn engines
  • Air‑con weakness from compressor clutch or condenser leaks
  • Power window regulators/door locks getting intermittent, plus the odd interior rattle
  • Clear‑coat fade/peel in harsh sun and the occasional humming wheel bearing

A thorough test drive and a pre‑purchase inspection will separate the good ones from the grumpy ones. A well‑maintained Lancer still does the daily slog with zero drama and a hint of pluck.
