2009 toyota hilux problems Page 29

The 2009 Toyota HiLux is a tough old nail, but even nails bend if you hit them long enough.

  • 1KD-FTV diesel injectors and seals can wear, causing rough idle, diesel knock, and oily “black death” around the rocker cover.
  • EGR and intake soot build-up leads to sluggish performance and smoke; a thorough clean and fresh filters usually perk it up.
  • Manuals can munch clutches and dual‑mass flywheels if they’ve towed half the country.
  • Front suspension bits (ball joints, control-arm bushes) and steering rack ends wear; rear leaf springs can sag or crack, and the tailshaft centre bearing may shudder.
  • Cooling system and water pump often come due around timing belt intervals—do the belt and pump together.
  • Airbag recalls (Takata) and other campaigns exist—run the VIN and check history.

Hunt for full service records, clean cold starts, and no diesel fumes under the bonnet; a pre‑purchase inspection is cheaper than a set of injectors. Treat it right and it’ll still outlast your camping fridge.
