2023 cents per kilometre Page 2

For Australia, the ATO’s cents-per-kilometre rate was 78c/km for the 2022–23 income year, and increased to 85c/km for 2023–24. That single rate is meant to cover the lot—fuel, rego, insurance, servicing, tyres and depreciation—so no stuffing shoeboxes with fuel receipts. You can claim up to 5,000 business kilometres per car per year using this method, but keep a sensible record of how you worked out the kilometres. It’s for work-related travel, not your daily commute to the office. If your situation’s a bit quirky, have a chat with your tax adviser or check the latest ATO guidance before you floor it on the claim.
