Australia’s Luxury Car Tax (LCT) in 2023 is a 33% slug on the GST‑inclusive value of a car above the relevant threshold.
For purchases from 1 Jul 2022–30 Jun 2023, thresholds were $84,916 (fuel‑efficient ≤7.0 L/100 km) and $71,849 (other).
From 1 Jul 2023–30 Jun 2024, they stepped up to $89,332 (fuel‑efficient) and $76,950 (other).
LCT applies only to the amount above the threshold and excludes things like rego, CTP, insurance and stamp duty; yes, it stacks on top of GST, because of course it does.
If you’re dancing near the line, a dealer or the ATO calculator will keep you out of trouble and your wallet only mildly traumatised.
