2.8 prado engine problems Page 454

The 2.8‑litre Prado (1GD‑FTV) is generally stout, but it’s had a few well‑known gremlins—nothing an adult service history and a sensible right foot can’t manage.

  • DPF hassles on early cars (circa 2015–2018): frequent regens, soot build‑up, rough running; later software updates and a manual regen switch improved things.
  • EGR and intake carbon build‑up over time, especially with short trips—periodic cleaning helps.
  • Injector wear and noisy cold starts; poor fuel or water contamination can also take out the high‑pressure pump.
  • Boost or turbo actuator issues popping up with age/towing; listen for whines and check for limp‑mode codes.
  • Cooling system neglect when towing heavy loads—keep the radiator clean and service the thermostat; many fit a trans cooler for autos when towing.
  • Timing belt and water pump due at scheduled intervals—skip it and you’re playing engine roulette.

Look for evidence of the DPF update, long highway runs, quality fuel, and regular servicing; a scan‑tool health check before you buy is cheap insurance.
