A 4x2 will happily chew through dirt roads and mild trails, but when the going turns gnarly it runs out of traction faster than your patience. Without driven front wheels or low range, you’re relying on ground clearance, tyres and momentum rather than wizardry. With decent all‑terrain tyres, traction control and (ideally) a rear diff lock, expect gravel, fire trails, light sand and shallow ruts to be fine; deep mud, soft beach sand and rock steps are where the comedy stops.
Australia’s tracks can be unforgiving—know when to turn around, because the cheapest mod is swallowing your pride before it gets expensive.
