If you split your life between bitumen and bush, all-terrains are the sweet spot: better on-road manners, decent wet grip, and enough bite for gravel without sounding like a didgeridoo at 100 km/h. Mud-terrains are your mates for clay, ruts and rocks, but they’re noisier, thirstier, and wear faster on highways.
Look for LT construction with a solid load index, reinforced sidewalls, and stone-ejecting tread if you tour corrugations. Prioritise wet braking and puncture resistance over macho tread blocks; the outback doesn’t care about your Instagram. Rotate every 10,000 km, match pressures to terrain (drop for sand, up for loads), and don’t forget a proper wheel alignment after rough trips. In short: buy for 90% of your driving, not the once-a-year mud bath.
