In Australia, under 4s must ride in the back if the vehicle has two or more rows—front seat only in a single-row vehicle and in an approved child seat (watch those airbags). From 4 to under 7, the front seat is only allowed if all rear seats are taken by other under-7s, and they must be in the correct booster with tether. At 7 and up, the front seat is legal with a proper seatbelt, but safety bods still prefer kids ride in the back until at least 12. Slide the front seat back as far as practical and never put a rearward-facing seat in front of an active airbag unless the car’s designed for it. Yes, it’s a lot of rules—but they’re the rules that keep little humans, well, human.
