In NSW you don’t actually get an “international licence” — you apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is a translation booklet, not a magic passport to speed. Apply through the authorised issuer for NSW (NRMA, on behalf of the Australian Automobile Association), either online or by post. You’ll need a current Australian driver licence, a passport‑style photo, basic ID details, and a fee; allow some processing and postage time. The IDP is typically valid for 12 months and must be carried with your Australian licence — on its own it’s as useful as a snorkel in the desert. Check the destination country’s rules, because some accept IDPs, some insist on them, and a few just want your local licence. Do the paperwork a week or two before you fly, then enjoy telling the rental desk you’ve come prepared.
