In Victoria, “approved” booster seats must comply with Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1754—anything else is a no-go.
Kids aged 4 to under 7 must ride in an appropriate restraint: either a forward‑facing seat with an inbuilt harness or a booster used with a properly adjusted seatbelt (or child safety harness where needed).
Under‑7s should sit in the back; only when all rear seats are taken by younger kids may a child under 7 sit in front in the correct restraint.
From 7 years old, a seatbelt is legal, but a booster is recommended until the belt fits correctly—think the old “five‑step test” and roughly 145 cm tall.
Look for labels showing AS/NZS 1754 compliance, use the top tether and correct belt path, and don’t import overseas seats no matter how “premium” the brochure looked.
When in doubt, check VicRoads or an accredited fitter; fines are a lot less fun than a quiet drive home.
