All-terrain tyres are the Swiss-Army boots for your 4x4: grippy enough for gravel and mud, civil enough for the school run.

Look for the 3‑Peak Mountain Snowflake marking if you want real wet-cold bite, and pick Light-Truck (LT) construction if you carry loads or air down often.

The trade-offs are predictable—more noise and weight than highway tyres, and usually longer braking distances on wet bitumen—so don’t expect miracles.

For balanced Aussie use, the latest “AT3”-style patterns from big names deliver quiet touring with stout sidewalls, while more aggressive blocks suit sand, clay and rocks but hum on the freeway.

Rotate them religiously, keep pressures right, and they’ll wear evenly instead of feathering like a badly tuned mullet.

If in doubt, match the tyre to your terrain and payload first, brand second; your ears and fuel bill will thank you.
