For the 2021–22 tax year (ending 30 June 2022), the ATO lets you claim car expenses via two methods: cents‑per‑kilometre at 72c/km (up to 5,000 work km), or the logbook method using your business‑use % over actual running costs.
“Car” means a vehicle under 1 tonne and up to 9 seats—so your dual‑cab over a tonne is playing in a different league.
Under logbook, keep a 12‑week logbook and records for fuel, servicing, tyres, rego, insurance, depreciation/lease interest, then apply your business‑use percentage.
Commuting is generally not deductible (nice try), but trips between workplaces or for work duties usually are.
Good records beat vibes: odometer readings, receipts, and that logbook you swore you’d fill in.
This is general info—check ATO guidance or a tax professional for your specific situation.
