Want to claim car kilometres with the ATO? Two paths: the neat-and-tidy cents-per-kilometre method, or the grown-up logbook method.
Cents-per-kilometre: claim up to 5,000 km per car per year at the ATO rate (about 78c/km for 2022–23, 85c/km for 2023–24, and 88c/km for 2024–25). No receipts for fuel needed, but keep notes on how you calculated the kms, and no, commuting or coffee runs don’t count.
Logbook: keep a 12‑week logbook and claim the business‑use percentage of actual costs (fuel, rego, insurance, depreciation, the lot)—perfect if you rack up big expenses.
Whichever route you take, keep evidence and don’t try to claim your weekend blast down the Great Ocean Road. If in doubt, check the ATO guidance or ask a tax pro before the calculator starts smoking.
