australian car import laws changing 2023 Page 9331

Yes—2023 was the year the paperwork finally caught up with reality. From 1 July 2023 the Road Vehicle Standards Act (RVSA) fully replaced the old scheme, moving to the online Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) instead of compliance plates and tightening the import pathways.

In practice, most personal imports now must fit a clear route: 25-years-and-older vehicles, the Specialist & Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS) eligibility list, or specific concessional categories (race, rally, disability, etc.).

Models not on the SEVS list are generally a no-go, and compliance must be done through approved operators—not your mate’s shed with a label maker.

State rego rules still apply on top, so check both federal and state requirements before you book a ship and a celebratory meat pie.
