australian stamps value guide Page 435

Pricing Australian stamps is part detective work, part resisting the urge to call everything “rare.” Value hinges on condition (centering, perforations, gum), rarity (print run, errors, watermarks), demand, and whether it’s mint (unhinged) or used.

As a ballpark: modern used decimals often fetch about AUD 0.05–0.20 each in bulk, while modern mint decimals typically trade around 80–100% of face value (sometimes less in bundles). Common pre-decimal definitives can be AUD 1–5 used, with nicer items running AUD 20–200; standout classics like high-value Kangaroo & Map issues can jump to AUD hundreds to tens of thousands depending on watermark and grade. Look up candidates in the ACSC or Stanley Gibbons, then sanity-check against recent Australian auction results and reputable dealer lists. For mixed lots and albums, expect a modest premium only if there’s verified better material lurking—nostalgia isn’t legal tender.
