automatic number plate recognition nsw Page 27

In NSW, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is basically a hyper-alert cop’s eyeballs with a photographic memory.

Mounted on police cars and at fixed sites, it scans plates and checks them against databases for things like expired rego, stolen vehicles, and outstanding alerts.

If your registration’s lapsed, it’ll ping quicker than you can say “snag in bread,” and a human officer decides what happens next.

Legit plates are fine; obscured, dirty, or novelty plates can mean fines and unwanted attention.

It’s lawful under NSW road and policing frameworks and subject to evidence and privacy rules—so no, it’s not reading your texts, just your plates.

Keep your rego current and your plates clean; ANPR never misses leg day.
