Chasing the best camping cars in Australia? You want rigs that shrug off corrugations and swallow swags, not city runabouts with delusions of grandeur.

Think Toyota LandCruiser/Prado, Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X for proper 4x4 touring and towing; Subaru Outback or Forester if you prefer a comfy wagon with real AWD. Utes like Hilux or Ranger with a canopy make brilliant bush bunkers, while Kia Carnival or Hyundai Staria win at space if the track isn’t too gnarly. A hybrid RAV4 is a frugal choice for lighter trails and long highway slogs. Prioritise ground clearance, recovery points, decent tyres, roof load ratings and a tow setup that suits your trailer. Pack a sense of humour and a head torch—one of them will fail at the worst moment, and it won’t be the torch.
