In a small car, the “best” child seat is the one that fits properly without turning your back seat into a Tetris boss level.
Look for compact convertibles certified to AS/NZS 1754 with a width around 44–45 cm, extended rear-facing capability, and simple ISOFIX or seatbelt installs that don’t require a yoga class.
Check that the top tether routes cleanly, the seat has multiple recline angles, and that front passengers still have knees afterwards.
Before you buy, test-fit in your exact car, follow the manual to the letter, and get a free check from an authorised restraint fitter—your sanity (and the kid) will thank you.
