As a rule of thumb, the Prado tows best when the caravan sits well under its rated braked limit (most late-models are up to 3,000 kg; earlier ones 2,500 kg—check your placard). For easy, drama-free touring, look at pop-tops or lightweight full-height vans in the 1,800–2,600 kg ATM zone, or hybrid off-road campers around 1,800–2,300 kg. Aim for a towball mass near 10% of the van’s weight and within the vehicle’s limit, and leave payload for people, fuel and gear. The Prado will thank you on hills and at the bowser.
Shortlist examples: 16–18 ft lightweight tourers, compact off-road hybrids, or a well-specced pop-top with electric brakes. Add a quality brake controller, weight-distribution hitch if needed, and keep an eye on GCM/GVM maths. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
