• BMW X3 — Pros: sharp handling, strong engines; Cons: firm ride, options pricing Olympics.
• Mercedes-Benz GLC — Pros: plush cabin, quiet and refined; Cons: pricey packages, touch controls that love fingerprints.
• Audi Q5 — Pros: balanced ride/handling, polished interior; Cons: conservative styling, tech starting to age.
• Volvo XC60 — Pros: comfy seats, safety tech galore; Cons: infotainment can be fiddly, hybrids can be thirsty if not charged.
• Genesis GV70 — Pros: generous spec and warranty, luxe feel; Cons: resale still finding its feet, ride can be busy on big wheels.

In Australia, most offer AWD, efficient turbo engines and five-year warranties now, which helps the maths.

Test-drive a couple on the same roads and let your backside and ears decide; they’re the most honest critics.
