best small cars in australia 2023

Australia’s best small cars in 2023 were a tight contest, and no, your uncle’s Facebook memes don’t count as data.

• Toyota Corolla (incl. Hybrid): superb economy and safety tech; cabin’s practical but not wild.
• Mazda 3: classy interior and sweet steering; rear seat and boot are snug.
• Hyundai i30: sharp value and long warranty; base engines are fine, not fast.
• Kia Cerato: roomy cabin and 7‑year warranty; infotainment feels dated in lower trims.
• Volkswagen Golf: polished drive and tech; pricier to buy and service.

Most drive-away deals sat roughly between $24k–$40k AUD depending on spec, so test-drive your top two and see which one flatters your commute.
