best stops sydney to melbourne Page 348

Driving Sydney to Melbourne? Pick your flavour: the Hume Highway for speed or the Coastal route (Princes Hwy) for scenery.

Hume highlights: Goulburn’s Big Merino, Gundagai’s Dog on the Tuckerbox, Holbrook’s submarine, a stretch-your-legs loop through Albury–Wodonga, plus detours to Beechworth and Glenrowan for history and pies.

Coastal gems: Kiama Blowhole and Berry, then south to Batemans Bay, Narooma and Bermagui, with Merimbula, Eden and Lakes Entrance before the final run.

One-day dash? Stick to the Hume and aim for 2–3 quick stops; got 2–3 days, take the coast and book a night halfway.

Either way, fuel up, watch the roos at dusk, and don’t underestimate how far “just one more café” can detour you.
