best tyres for caravans Page 526

The best tyres for caravans aren’t flashy—just tough, correctly rated, and not older than your esky.

Look for LT (Light Truck) construction, a load index that covers the maximum axle load divided by the number of tyres, and a speed rating L or higher.

Stick with highway-terrain patterns for bitumen touring; go all‑terrain only if your route actually goes beyond the brochure.

Run pressures to the van’s placard (check them cold), use metal valve stems, and keep tyres balanced, matched, and under 6 years old—rubber ages even when parked.

Popular caravan sizes (e.g., 185R14C, 195R15C) are fine if the ratings suit; brand matters less than proper spec and fresh manufacture dates.

A tyre pressure monitoring system is cheap insurance, because nothing ruins a holiday like a delamination on the Nullarbor.
