best way to transport car interstate Page 5

Driving it yourself is the cheap, masochistic option; proper interstate transport is smarter and often not much more once you count fuel, flights and time.

Use a reputable carrier: open car carriers are the value play (roughly AUD 700–1,400 metro-to-metro), while enclosed transport costs more (about AUD 1,500–3,000) but keeps stone chips and nosy neighbours at bay; rail is mid-pack on price but limited on routes. Door-to-door is convenient, depot-to-depot saves a few bucks, and remote areas add surcharges like a surprise kangaroo at dusk.

Make sure the car runs, has less than a quarter tank, no loose bits, and documented existing damage; get transit insurance in writing, not just a cheery promise. Book 1–3 weeks ahead, expect 3–10 days in transit across the big distances, and don’t panic if the truck’s ETA moves with the weather.

In short: pick open carrier for everyday cars, enclosed for precious metal, and never forget—cheap, fast, safe: choose two.
