bmw s70/2

The BMW S70/2 is the 6.1-litre V12 that catapulted the McLaren F1 into the history books, and yes, it revs like a symphony with anger issues.

Configuration: 6.1-litre naturally aspirated V12, DOHC 48-valve; Power: ~461 kW @ 7,400 rpm; Torque: ~651 Nm @ 5,600 rpm; Redline: ~7,500 rpm; Dry-sump with 12 individual throttle bodies; Engine mass: ~266 kg.

Designed by BMW Motorsport to McLaren’s uncompromising brief, it’s light, compact, and heroically un-turbocharged.

It’s tractable down low and ferocious up top, living in an engine bay famously lined with gold foil because heat management, but make it glamorous.

Compared with modern turbo V8s, it trades boosty wallop for throttle response sharp enough to shave.
