American ghost writer Roberta Fisher is employed by Sybille Halloway, a glamorous but almost forgotten Hollywood star from the Golden Era of movies, to write her scandalous life story. In the London home of the elderly actress who lives in "genteel poverty," Roberta discovers that fiction often displaces truth as Sybille recounts the exploits of her younger days, boasting that she always made lovers out of enemies. In lieu of payment, Sybille gives Roberta her opal ring. Though it is beautiful, Roberta is well aware that superstition says opals are unlucky. After a frightening sequence of events, Roberta's notes for the old actress's memoirs are destroyed. Had Sybille attempted to blackmail someone, a past lover, with her story which had cruelly backfired, or is Roberta's intuition about opals really true?Wearing the old lady's opal ring, Roberta finds herself ensnared into the secret and manipulative world of blackmail. Does she really believe that the murderer of Sybille Halloway was the artist and unpopular landowner of Edenbrook, Nick Demian? Or is Roberta being used to frame an innocent man? No one is above suspicion in The Wine-Dark Opal. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Fiction; Crime; ISBN: 072785139X. ISBN/EAN: 9780727851390. Inventory No: 13110073.
