Bourke to Birdsville is a proper outback run—plan on about 1,100–1,300 km depending on whether you go via Thargomindah/Windorah (more sealed) or the Tibooburra–Innamincka/Cordillo Downs route (rougher, utterly spectacular). Expect long stretches of unsealed road, bulldust and grids, so a high-clearance 4WD and LT tyres save tears and wheel nuts. Fuel and supplies are sparse—think Bourke, Thargomindah/Quilpie/Windorah or Innamincka, then Birdsville—so carry water, a spare or two, and check road reports before you roll. Skip travel after heavy rain, watch for stock and roos at dusk, and tell someone your plan because phone reception plays hide-and-seek. Best season is the cooler months (April–September); summer heat turns the trip into a slow roast.
