First, the fingernail test: if your nail catches, it’s through the clear coat and you won’t buff it out—think touch-up or respray. If it doesn’t catch (transfer or light clear-coat scuffs), wash, decontaminate, and try a scratch remover or light compound. Work a small area with a microfibre or dual-action polisher at low speed, moderate pressure, and straight passes—check often so you don’t cook the clear. Stubborn marks may need a medium compound followed by a finishing polish to restore gloss. For deeper lines, fill with touch-up paint, level with 2000–3000 grit wet sand, then compound and polish—steady hands only. Finish with a quality sealant or ceramic to add some sacrificial armour, and accept that black cars show everything, including your sins. If you’re unsure, a pro detailer can save a panel; a heavy hand can cost you a bonnet.
