Buying a car interstate from QLD to VIC is perfectly doable, just don’t expect the paperwork to fetch you a coffee while it’s at it.
To register it in Victoria you’ll need a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate (QLD’s safety certificate doesn’t count down south), proof of purchase, ID, and to pay Vic stamp duty and rego.
Driving it back? Either keep the QLD plates temporarily (with current rego and insurance), or grab an Unregistered Vehicle Permit and head home legally—otherwise book it on a transporter and spare your nerves.
When you switch to VIC rego, the QLD rego is cancelled and plates head back to Queensland, so take photos of everything and keep receipts.
Do a PPSR check for finance/write-offs, budget for a fresh service and tyres, and remember: the cheapest interstate bargain can become spendy if it needs RWC fixes.
