buying an interstate car vic Page 11

Buying an interstate car into VIC is doable—just don’t expect the paperwork to tuck itself in at night.

If the car’s currently registered and insured, you can drive it home; otherwise get an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (from the origin state or VicRoads) or book transport. To put it on Victorian plates you’ll need a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate, proof of ownership, ID, and a visit to VicRoads; interstate safety checks generally don’t count. Budget for stamp duty, number plates and registration fees, plus freight or fuel—call it a few hundred to over a grand on top, depending how far you’ve gone on your shopping safari. Do a PPSR check to make sure it’s not under finance, confirm the VIN matches the compliance plate, and eyeball for rust or hail that “wasn’t there yesterday.” Spot your candidate on Tradingpost, line up the paperwork, and you’ll be cruising the Monash with a smug grin and all the right documents.
