Campervan fuel consumption hinges on size, weight and how brick-like your home-on-wheels is in a headwind. Small van-based campers often sip 8–12 L/100 km (diesel) or 10–14 L/100 km (petrol), mid-size coachbuilt rigs use about 12–16 L/100 km, and big motorhomes can gulp 15–25+ L/100 km.
Diesel usually drinks 10–20% less than petrol, but roof racks, lifts, 4WD bits and speeds over 100 km/h will blow the numbers out. Keep tyres at proper pressures, drive smoothly and cruise at 90–100 km/h if you like your wallet; heavy tow loads and alpine climbs say otherwise. These are typical ranges in Australia and vary by model, tune and load. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
