Short answer: no — in Australia you can’t legally carry a passenger in the back of a ute on public roads.
Seatbelt laws require every backside to be in a proper seat with a fitted belt; a tray, tub or canopy area doesn’t count.
Even “just around the corner” won’t fly; expect fines and demerit points, and it’s especially serious with kids.
The only time it’s okay is on private property, or if the vehicle has certified, ADR-compliant seats and belts installed in the rear — which a standard tray does not.
Keep the humans in the cab, the tools in the back, and the dog safely tethered if it’s riding there.
