Short answer: you can, but tread lightly.
Methylated spirits will strip wax and can haze soft plastics; rub hard or leave it sitting and you risk dulling the clear coat.
If you must, use it only for spot-cleaning sap or tar on a cool panel, apply sparingly to a microfibre, wipe once, then rinse and re-wax the area.
Better yet, use isopropyl alcohol (10–20% diluted) or a dedicated bug/tar remover—they’re kinder to modern clear coats.
Avoid fresh paint, avoid direct sun, and always test in an inconspicuous spot; your bonnet is not a science lab.
When in doubt, reach for safer products and keep the metho for the camping stove.
