car-free days Page 9052

Car‑free days are when cities shut streets to traffic and let people take them back—on foot, bike, scooter, or sheer stubbornness. The result is cleaner air, quieter blocks, and the sudden realisation your café is only a ten‑minute walk away.

Many places mark World Car Free Day around 22 September, with pop‑up events, markets, and detours that make sat‑navs cry. In Australia, councils sometimes run temporary road closures and “open streets” trials—check local notices so you don’t bring a car to a non‑car party.

If you must travel, plan ahead, grab your Opal or myki, and leave the V8 at home to sulk. Think of it as a test drive for a calmer city—minus the test, and blissfully minus the traffic.
