car aircon stinks

If your car’s aircon smells like a wet dog’s gym bag, the evaporator and cabin filter are probably hosting a thriving mould colony.

Start with a fresh cabin filter, then use an evaporator foam cleaner/disinfectant and make sure the condensate drain isn’t blocked.

Run the system hot for a few minutes, then cool with A/C on and recirc off to dry things out; make it a habit for the last minute of each drive.

If the pong persists, you may have other clues:

  • Sweet smell: possible heater core coolant leak.
  • Burnt smell: electrical fault or slipping belt — get it checked.
  • Vinegar/musty: heavy bacterial growth — try a professional ozone or deep clean.
