In Australia, "car insurance value" usually means whether your comprehensive policy pays out market value or an agreed value—two similar words, very different cheques.
Market value is what the car would sell for today, based on age, kms, condition and comparable sales; premiums are often cheaper but payouts follow the market down. Agreed value is a number you and the insurer lock in (within a range), which can cost a bit more but helps if your car’s rare, accessorised, or the market’s doing backflips. To estimate, look at recent comparable listings (Tradingpost is handy), note factory options and mods, and be honest about condition—the assessor will be. Whichever you choose, read the fine print on excess, accessories cover and depreciation on parts, then sleep easy knowing you won’t be haggling in a tow yard.
