New South Wales is quietly stacked with cracking car museums, perfect for a weekend fang minus the speeding fines.

Start with the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst for touring cars, bikes and Bathurst 1000 history that smells faintly of race fuel.

Head to the Australian Motorlife Museum at Kembla Grange for veteran and vintage machinery plus period motoring memorabilia.

Further north, the Inverell Transport Museum has a broad collection of cars, bikes and trucks, while the Parkes Motor Museum keeps the classics sparkling at the Henry Parkes Centre.

Check opening hours before you roll out; some are volunteer-run and their calendars are as quirky as a three-on-the-tree shifter.
