car revs high but no acceleration Page 1130

When the revs climb but the speedo gives you the silent treatment, something’s slipping—usually in the bits that cost money.

• Manual: worn or oil‑contaminated clutch causing slip, often with a hot, acrid smell.
• Automatic/CVT: low or burnt transmission fluid, failed torque converter, or worn clutch packs/belt.
• Misleading but common: wheelspin on wet roads or a dragging handbrake making the engine flare.
• If revs “flare” during gear changes, that’s a classic sign of internal transmission slip.

Easing off the throttle can limit damage; check fluid level/condition, scan for codes, and book a transmission specialist—towing beats turning it into confetti. If it’s under warranty, don’t touch a thing beyond basic checks.
