car stamp duty sa Page 8929

In South Australia, car stamp duty (vehicle registration duty) is charged on the dutiable value—the higher of purchase price or market value.

Rates are tiered: 1% up to $1,000; $10 + 2% of the amount from $1,000–$2,000; $30 + 3% from $2,000–$3,000; then $60 + 4% of every dollar over $3,000.

Example time: a $20,000 car is roughly $740 in duty; a $50,000 buy is about $1,940.

New or used, the rates are the same; rego, CTP and plate fees are separate, so don’t lump them in with duty.

Yes, it’s the privilege tax for buying wheels—like paying extra for sauce on your pie, only less tasty.
