If you’ve got the 17‑character VIN, the official move is a PPSR check—about $2 for the good oil: encumbrance, write‑off and stolen status.

It won’t dish out every spec or service fairy tale, but it’s the baseline truth serum before money changes hands.

No VIN, only a rego plate? Buy a vehicle history report using plate + state; it’ll fetch the VIN from NEVDIS, then you can PPSR like a responsible adult.

Can’t spot the VIN? Check the windscreen base, driver’s door jamb, or the compliance plate under the bonnet.

Do the checks, sleep better, and avoid adopting a mechanical soap opera.
