You’re after a car with a roof that folds down; the posh term is a convertible (or cabriolet if you fancy gelato with your petrol). Soft-tops are lighter and simpler, while hard-tops are quieter and more secure but gobble boot space and add weight. Expect extra wind noise, potential leaks if neglected, and roof mechanisms that demand proper servicing—skip that and you’ll fund your mechanic’s holiday. Check for smooth roof operation, tidy seals, a solid service history, and enough boot space for more than a thimble; some have token rear seats and limited child-seat options. In Australia, summer sun means SPF 50, hats, and maybe a wind deflector unless you like the “tomato in a hairdryer” look. Popular picks range from the Mazda MX-5 to the Mini Convertible and Ford Mustang Convertible; test-drive roof-up and roof-down. If you spot one on Tradingpost, get a pre-purchase inspection and enjoy your vitamin D responsibly.
