Before you hitch dreams to the tow ball, run a PPSR (formerly REVS) search using the caravan’s VIN or chassis number; it checks for finance owing, stolen, or written-off status in Australia.
Cross-check the rego with your state authority (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD, etc.) so the plates, VIN and expiry all sing from the same hymn sheet.
Ask for service records and the compliance plate—confirm the build date and that the ATM/GTM match what’s on the rego.
Then inspect like a hawk: water ingress, soft floors, chassis rust, hail repairs, dodgy 240V/12V wiring, and tyres older than your esky.
If it’s listed on Tradingpost, get the VIN up front and keep the PPSR receipt as proof.
