A cash settlement in car insurance is when the insurer offers you money instead of organising repairs or replacing the car—convenient, if you like DIY stress.
It’s typically the assessed repair cost or your policy’s market/agreed value for a write-off, minus your excess and any finance payout (lenders get first dibs).
Take the cash and you’re responsible for repairs, quality, timelines and any shortfall; the claim usually wraps up and you lose the insurer’s repair guarantee.
Figures can be tweaked for salvage, depreciation, betterment and GST, and mods or non-genuine parts can complicate things.
Get the offer in writing and read the PDS: confirm market vs agreed value, towing/storage, and whether the car will be a statutory or repairable write-off.
If the number feels stingy, bring quotes and valuations and negotiate—insurers do budge, just not out of sheer generosity.
